Hi Helene If you go to P & O Cruises website it shows on the top of the itinerary how many formal nights they will have (usually when it's a day at sea). Strongly recommend P & O! Men do not have to wear black/white dinner jackets they can wear smart lounge suits. If your husband does want a dinner suit Matalan can supply -dinner jacket £35, Trousers £15,dress shirt including black dickie bow £12 - he will have it then for all the next cruises you will want to go on!!. I found a long black skirt and different `sparkly' tops were useful for formal evenings. Don't let the clothing worry you just book it and you certainly will enjoy it!
Depends on the cruise line. NCL will have a right old missmash of styles on formal nights. Celebrity are more formal at dinner, but with a mix of styles, suits as well as DJs. P&O/Princess will be pretty much all DJs on formal nights. Med cruises of 14 days generally have 3 formal nights, a middle day as well as 'sail away' & 'Captain's farewell'.
Fashion point - men do not wear white jackets unless [a] they are waiters or [b] you are cruising south of the equator..!! Tell him that a suit is fine - and a few floaty Per Una dresses will be perfect for you.
Depends on the cruise line. some have no formal dining and therefore no formal dinners. even where there is more formal dining, on a week cruise you might expect 2 gala/formal night, 2 casual and the rest what they class as informal. on the ships that i ahve been on, for men the gala evenings it is acceptable for men to wear a suit or dinner jacket, although i have seen some with just a shirt and tie and no jacket at all. for ladies, the programme advisesd cocktail or evening dress. i tend to wear full length dresses a) because i hev them and b) because i just love the oppoertunity to dress up. however i'd say that most dont wear full length dresses and that a cocktail dress or even a summer dress that you could dress up with some jewellrey or accessories would be fine, some ladies were 2 piece evening outfits too. i'd suggest that you should decide whether you want a more formal or informal cruise. onc eyou have decided that and have chosen your cruise line/ship, you can check dress code with them or on here with other reviewers who have been on that particular ship, hope this help.
Island cruises you can dress as you like but you can dress up as well men must wear long trouser in restaurants at night hope ive been helpfull enjoy your cruis.
