We did the Thomson cruise out of Tenerife on New Year's Eve a couple of years ago and visited Lanzarote, Madeira, Gran Canaria etc. Be prepared though, it was a pretty bumpy trip!

Thomsons do 7 night fly cruises to to the Canaries, Maderia and Morroco. They start in November and go through to April. You can fly to Maderia,Gran Canaria or Tenerife and the ship on the winter 08/09 season will be the Celebration. I am looking forward to my birthday treat next March and am flying to Gran Canaria so I will have a full day in Tenerife to enjoy Mt Teide.

It sounds like a good idea and I'd certainly go on one, but the cruise lines would have to establish a home port base for restocking the ship every week and that is no mean feat. I know Funchal has a good harbour but it is often full with visiting cruise liners and the airport isn't that large. Not sure about the port capacity of the other main islands. Given the ever rising cost of oil they may well take up the idea though, as think how much they could save by being in port rather than at sea.

Check again with the main big companies - I'm sure I've seen others going - including Fred Olsen.

Last Xmas we cruised with Costa Serena from Savona (near Genova in Italy), visiting Barcelona, Casablanca, Tenerife, Madeira, Malaga, etc back to Savona. I'm sure they will do the same this year.

Thomsons do a Canarie Island cruise at Christmas and New Year. You could book two weeks back to back which would take you over Christmas AND New Year. It would also let you relax more as you could choose which week you want to explore the Islands.
