No they cannot. Smoking areas are becoming more and more restricted on cruise ships in line with legislation at home. You will have to check with each specific cruise line to find out their exact rules and regulations on the subject. They are being updated month on month. Generally there will be specific places where passengers are and are not allowed to smoke. These maybe outside on certain decks, whole public rooms or areas in public rooms. Most do not now allow smoking in cabins, as it is well known that this leaves a very unpleasant smell for future guests to walk into. A few lines have also banned smoking on cabin balconies whilst others still allow it. If it is that important to you, then make sure that you check each lines rules BEFORE you waste your time searching for cruises. I'm with you on this one! Happy cruising.

Ida and Neil Down - Answered a Question by Austin (24 Jun 08 19:43)

Cruise Lines are gradually changing their policies as far as smoking is concerned and it seems that every month more restrictions are being applied. Choose the Cruise Line carefully and you can almost avoid smoke. I have just come off Azamara Quest and smoking there has been reduced to two small areas and what a difference it has made. Where you need to exercise caution is in the countries you intend to visit. Egypt seems to have no restrictions about where you can smoke and Turkey is almost as bad, Greece is just as bad and at the airport in Athens virtually every table in the cafes and bars had a smoker on it and amazingly enough there was even an extra area marked "Smoking Area", bizarre .... We have just been on po's ventura where i'm happy to say all cabins are now no smoking, i think they can smoke on their balconies and around the terrace pool, which is wrong as the kids area is right above it so it can get a bit smokey at times, they also have a smoking bar called the exchange but it really did stink and we avoided the area as much as possible the smoke also came into the arena theatre on the port side of the ship if anyone opened the door from that bar. it can be avoided but practice holding your breath so you can run through without breathing in the fumes!!! on the whole the ship is pretty much smoke free.
